RESEARCH: BFI Statistics AND Audience research

BFI STATISTICS

AUDIENCE RESEARCH

What is an audience?
an assemble group of people at a film/ concert/ meeting

Target audience
a group of particular people of which a product is aimed for

Target audiences are useful and crucial to films as it it easier for the production to cater for a particular groups interest.
for example an animation film would be popular and made for children.
Horror films would appeal to the 15-24 age group.
Romantic films might appeal to females.
Action films would appeal to men or people with interests in them.

RESEARCHING TARGET AUDIENCES

I created a survey on Survey Monkey to research the genres and elements in films that an audience would prefer.
My survey consisted of 4 questions:

  1. What kind of films do you like(regionally)
  2. What types of characters you you like to see in films
  3. What is your favourite genre
  4. Why do you like this genre

Question 1

The three options that my first question consisted of was American, British or International(Indian, Chinese etc)
From my results I have gathered that the majority of the responses enjoyed American films.

Question 2

My second question asking about characters the audience like to see in a film (Heroes and Villains, Protagonists, Animals or romantically involved characters)
the responses enjoyed seeing a protagonist character in films and films containing heroes and villains weren't so popular.

Question 3

Question 3 was a multiple choice question, listing the main film genres
the most popular was action. Comedy, thriller, horror, romance and fantasy were equally popular.

Question 4

This question was a response to why the selected genres from the previous questions were the respondents favourite genres.
