RESEARCH: Importance of Sound in Film

Sound Establishes:
Tone
Atmosphere
Plot
Characters
Genre
Location

Developments:
→ Sound Design - ensures 3D & visceral experience to assume presence of audience in the Pictures.
Increases enjoyment and engagement of the audience.

Deictic:
Foley - The reproduction of everyday sounds in the studio, using props to recreate and enhance audio-quality of actions.
Wild Sound - Audio recorded without pictures (un-synchronised sound) to insert in video later on.
Ambient Sound Effects - background sounds (e.g. wind, birds, rain, crowds)

Non-Diectic:
Score -
Song -
Voice Over -
Dubbing -

Terminology:
→ SoundScape - The overall sound environment
→ Sound Design- Process of creating/mixing/recording 1+ sounds.
"Suspend Disbelief" - Adds to realism of the Film.
→ Makes up 50% of the atmosphere.
→ Diegetic - Sounds that are happening in the scene (not edited in) E.g. Dialogue, footsteps etc.
→ Non-Diegetic - Edited-in sounds. E.g. narration, music and sound effects.

Non-Diegtic Sound Devices:
Diegetic Sound Devices:
The Taking of Pelham 123 W/O Sound:
- We see the visuals of a fast-paced, New York setting.
- Felt disengaged and out of time with the timing, because there was no atmosphere or tone established.

With Sound:
Increase of suspense, intensity and tension = more engaged with the film.
Sound adds realism and shows the role of Characters, Genre and Setting.
