RESEARCH: What Is Genre?

Genre (category/type):

  • - Helps group different films together, according to their Semantic and Syntactic features

Codes and Conventions:

  • - Features that help us recognise the genre
  • - Gives an expectation of what might happen.

Main Generic Signifiers:

  • Characters
  • Colours
  • Props
  • Locations
  • Shot Types
  • Lighting
  • and so forth...

Identifying Genre:

Mean Girls:  TEEN DRAMA (Chick-Flick)

Set in High school. Exaggerated clothes and cliques of pink outfits matching a group of girls suggests this genre is a Chick-flick. We have a wide shot, revealing the different groups of High school students, so this would appeal to the teenage audience. The warm tones also shows that this isn't a thriller and is more of a comedic genre with a girly theme to it, appealing to also (mainly) the females.

Fast and Furious 7: ACTION
We see a man leaping from a car- which is being crushed by a tank- to another car. This shows a very thrilling and fast-paced action scene. It's also set on the highway with a very dusty atmosphere, suggesting that there's a lot of violence too.
