After analysing 3 different openings to a film via http://www.artofthetitle.com/, here is what the traditional opening of a film has:
Features:
✔ Name of the Film
✔ Title Credits
✔ Company; Starring Crew
✔ Genre idea (mood/theme set)
✔ Location(s)
✔ Sound(s): SOUND FX, Music, Voice-Over/Dialogue (optional)
✔ Introduction to Character(s)
Credits at the start of the film can be shown in several different ways- usually against background audio tracks and with an opening piece of the film, setting the scene of the movie and setting a foundation for the audience.
NERVE (Adventure/Thriller/Crime):
The sound of an Apple Mac logging on sets the Opening Scene. Filled with a technology, every producer and actor's name Title Card is customised with the use of social media, appealing to a younger generation with 3D and bright colours. Sound effects of computers/digital noises and the opening song: Basenji - Can't Get Enough, makes the audience thrilled and excited. Nothing is spoiled in the introduction, no dialogue, just pure modern tech; and we get the idea that this movie is all about applications with tints of adventure and crime with its enticing name "NERVE".
Key To A Good Opening:
But the key is to make the audience feel a strong emotion- engage/shock/humour the audience. The tone and atmosphere is to hook us within the first 10 pages of the Opening- quick, sharp strokes of detail without giving everything away is important to keep us engaged.
(Avatar (2010) is an exception to the tradition of the opening and has been a very successful movie.)
